Monica Chairez studies journalism and sociology at a university that sits behind the flashing lights of the Las Vegas strip, but this 21-year old doesn’t let it absorb her. ” I always wanted to graduate early and finish school. That has just always been my goal.” With the demand for pretty people, Monica easily found a job modeling in fashion shows and special events. “I love Las Vegas, but it takes some getting used to if you’re not from here,” she says. But this local gal hasn’t always been in the Vegas spotlight. “My parents were really strict, I never went to the strip until I was much older. I was only allowed to see the dolphins at the Mirage.” Monica says she has been an animal lover since she was a child. “I used to volunteer at the animal shelter when I was nine years old. I would cry because I wanted to adopt all of them.” Her enthusiasm for animals led her to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle and support animal rights organizations like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). “I’ve seen what PETA is doing and how they’re making a difference. It really is amazing and I love being part of that.”
When it comes to men and dating Monica opens up in the most candid behavior. “Nothing is more attractive than a guy with manners. He must be polite and an absolute gentleman,” she says as she smiles. “Guys get too absorbed in images they see on television and forget how to treat girls. Every girl should be treated like a princess.” Her adamant opinions on dating have become quite a skill for Monica. She says she hopes to one day write her own men’s advice column. “My guy friends always ask me for advice on girls and dating. I want to tell guys the exact things women want, because us girls are so picky,” she says giggling. “That would be my dream.”
Even though modeling and studying consume the majority of her schedule, Monica says the bond with her family keeps her motivated. “I love my family, they’re amazing. My parents are the best role models for me,” she says. “They taught me pretty girls can be brilliant.”
